Shooting with Fafa has always been fun and full of surprises because of the vibe she brings to every shoot is astounding; our shoot for "Gurl Gaze Tokyo" was no exception. Fafa is a gurl from Dalian, China who came to Japan to pursue her dream of working in the fashion design industry.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
FAFA: I’m Fafa. I’m currently trying my best to live in Japan. I am passionate about
everything that is interesting and fun, and I also love taking photos!
How would you describe your personal style in terms of fashion?
FAFA: I really like futuristic vibes and the Chinese millennial vintage style. I try to merge these two aesthetics into my own original style.
Which aspects of futuristic vibes and the Chinese millennial vintage style have specifically caught your eye?
FAFA: I am very attracted to the psychedelic aspect, which in my opinion, both of these styles share.
And you are planning to pursue a career in which industry?
FAFA: Fashion! Styling! This industry seems to be the most interesting to me. Even
though I would like to try modelling, I know I may be lacking in some aspects for this industry. But if given the chance, I would definitely try it.
What does good styling look like in your opinion?
FAFA: I find styling that consists of opposing elements with perfect color schemes, where the overall look is still harmonious and soothing the most successful.
What pattern or color of clothes can we find the most in your closet?
FAFA: Butterflies! And dragons too, haha.
So where do you usually buy the clothing that you like?
FAFA: At vintage clothing stores. It is the most amazing thing ever since coming to Japan cos living here is like being lost in a giant ocean of vintage clothing.
How did you buy vintage clothing when you were still in China?
FAFA: There are a few vintage stores on Taobao. Sometimes the clothes from
nodress (a Taobao shop) are quite amazing. I also buy from UNIF once in a while.
Ever since you came to Japan, have you changed your fashion style?
FAFA: Oh yes, haha. It is more colorful nowadays, and I’m more fearless when it comes to wearing more “bizarre” pieces.
What made you become more daring with your fashion choices?
FAFA: I feel like the level of acceptance is very high in Japan, and there are way more bizarre people in Japan as well, haha.
What do you think is the value of fashion in human culture?
FAFA: I think fashion can represent the inner side of a person, whether it is interesting or boring. Imagine a world where everyone was faceless, and could only be recognised by their outfits; that would be so much fun.
Lastly, can you tell me the things you find specifically beautiful in China and in Japan?
FAFA: That question is too hard, omg. Hmm let me think. As far as China goes, it would be Wong Kar-wai’s movies. In Japan, it would probably their pornography. Hahaha.
