Arlenys
Interview with the Berlin-based DJ from The Bronx3 September 2024
YEOJA Mag sat down with Arlenys, a DJ from The Bronx, to chat about what it is like to start out as a DJ, the future of techno, and of course, her sun, moon, and rising as it relates to her musical influence. (Arlenys will also be hosting YEOJA's next PASS IT ON workshop this Thursday)
Hi Arlenys! Could you please introduce yourself to our readers? ♡
I’m Arlenys, a DJ from The Bronx, NY residing in Berlin. I mostly play hypnotic techno, blended with progressive trance. Besides DJing, I love reading, dancing, singing, being in nature, and hiking 🌈
This week, you will be hosting YEOJA’s Pass It On. This initiative aims to exchange knowledge, resources, and skills amongst members of the YEOJA community through free-of-charge workshops. What inspired you to take part in Pass It On, and what can participants look forward to in your workshop?
It was actually the idea of my good friend Lisa! She had asked me to teach her how to DJ and suggested I give a workshop at her clothing store, Not Too Sweet Vintage. I loved the idea of giving back to the community in this way so obviously agreed! Once Rae (Mee-Jin) heard about this, she got into gear and put everything in motion to make Pass It On possible.
People can expect a complete beginner’s workshop, so no previous knowledge is needed. We will learn the basics such as beatmatching, phrasing, where to purchase music, and using Rekordbox to curate a set.

Can you share some of your own experiences from when you were a beginning DJ and musician? What motivated you to start a career in music and what are some of the lessons you learned along the way?
Ever since I could remember, I was always interested in music. Primarily, it was mostly singing and songwriting. I often frequented karaoke bars in NYC and wrote lyrics from time to time. When the pandemic hit, I picked up DJing as a new outlet.
I would say the biggest lesson I have learned and am still trying to embrace is not to overthink things or be afraid of taking risks. Sometimes I can get too in my head about having “the perfect set” which makes me a bit anxious. I have to remind myself that DJing should be a fun experience.

You are now based in Berlin. How has your experience as a DJ and musician in both cities shaped your perspective on diversity within club cultures? What differences have you noticed in the club scenes across various cities?
I would say the scene in NYC is definitely more multicultural, but that’s a given considering the city itself is more ethnically diverse. In Berlin, there is an emphasis placed on safety and inclusivity. A lot of parties and clubs have implemented awareness teams to ensure that everyone feels safe and free to be themselves. Nowadays in NYC have an awareness team, but I haven’t really seen many other clubs embrace this concept.
What would you say are your sun, moon, and rising in terms of musical influence?
Sun☼: The Doors
Moon☾: Lana Del Rey
Rising↑: Joy Division

You are also part of the dark-wave duo Velvet Vanity. Recently, your first track ‘Your Body’ premiered under label the brvtalist. The track is moody, industrial, and slightly experimental. What does the concept of darkness within music mean to you and how do you express this through your music?
The concept of darkness within music means the exploration of emotions such as sadness, fear, or existential angst. It can explore subjects like grief, loneliness, and other shadowy aspects of the human psyche. I express this in my music through lyrics which often reflect loss and inner turmoil. When creating, this is what feels most authentic to me.
Techno fairy, what do you see in store for the future of techno?
I believe the hype of “TikTok” Techno will die down and traditional techno will become more popular again.

Could you share a label, radio, or venue that you think is underrated and more people should know about?
I wouldn’t say it’s underrated since the bar is quite popular in Berlin, but I would encourage everyone to check out Kwia. It’s a cute ambient bar in Kreuzberg where you have to remove your shoes to enter. There are two rooms: one for socializing, and a quiet room for performances.

Where can we catch you playing this summer? Are there any upcoming gigs you are particularly excited about?
I’m super excited to play at the first ever FLINTA sex party series called SLIT at Lab.oratory in Berghain. I feel incredibly honored to be given this opportunity. I’m also looking forward to playing again at Paragon in NYC on Oct 18. I had such a great time when I was there in March. Plus, I get to visit my family and friends.

To wrap up our conversation, I would love to hear about your personal goals and aspirations. Are there any dream collaborations or venues you’d like to pursue?
One of my favorite things about DJing is that I’m able to travel to beautiful, remote places. I would love to have more gigs where I can also go hiking and be still in the mountains. It’s the best of both worlds. Another goal is to play at more queer focussed parties.
